Femmes Chinoises refers to Chinese Women in French. After his previous ChinoiSERIES was well-received in Hong Kong and Singapore, Andre further examines and challenges the conventional aesthetics of Chinoiserie using Chinese women as his subject matter. His subjects are painted white to suggest Chinese traits of beauty -美白 (mei bai), which literally means “beautiful white”. Andre expands his experimental juxtaposing of images and oriental motifs to explore and to offer viewers the rich vocabulary of symbolic meanings in Chinese culture.
