Singaporean ceramic artist, Alvin Tan Teck Heng, is holding a solo exhibition entitled Building an Empire, presented by One East Asia, in association with Nexus Arts and Boxplot. The exhibition, which consists of a display of one thousand wheel-thrown and glazed ceramic rice bowls gradually changing in colour from vibrant yellow to almost white, represents Tan’s effort to challenge the line between ‘traditional pottery’ and ‘contemporary art’.
“The rice bowl is of great significance in Chinese culture; it is about feeding the clan, it is about feeding the family. There is a Chinese saying that can be translated as ‘the people place food as high as Heaven,” Tan comments.
Having worked with clay for more than two decades, Tan has exhibited in over 20 group shows worldwide. Building an Empire will exhibit from 5th to 25th August 2015. One East Asia is located at Thong Teck Building, 15 Scotts Road, #09-03, Singapore 228218. +65 6737 1819
