Opening this Monday, 12 Dec 2017, Alex Seton presents Refuge,2015 at Kochi-Muziris Biennale (India).
The work belongs to a series entitled Refoulement that showed at Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney before going on tour in Canberra and Melbourne.
The term “non-refoulement” refers to a legal principle to which many countries are bound, protecting asylum seekers and refugees from being sent back to a place of persecution. Inspired by the discussions and connotations around this term and issue of asylum seekers in Australia, Seton had created the series. With Refuge, in particular – depicting the sort of protective covers that refugees seek to have for their protection.
Amongst other works, Alex Seton’s exhibition entitled Pygmalion is also on show now at Sullivan + Strumpf, Singapore. To view an exclusive video on the showcase by intersection.sg, click here.
