Due to differences in operational approaches, the Venice Biennale 2017 artistic team has requested for Curator June Yap and Artist Zai Kuning to withdraw from the project.
As the duo had been working together for the past 5 months, this news came as a surprise and shock to the art community.
Low Eng Teong, Director of Sector Development at the National Arts Council says that the decision is mutually agreed between members of the project team and thus NAC has assessed and accepted it.
The council has reported that the project’s overall artistic vision remains with the artist’s proposal and practice. It is underway and on track, and NAC will work with Zai to continue the production of the artwork and prepare for the exhibition.
Zai has spent more than a decade creating work focused on the Malay culture and history, in particular, the Orang Laut (sea gypsies of Southeast Asia)
