Currently on show at the Asian Art Platform is a series of paintings by Chinese Artist, Chen Yaqiu. Following a common theme of mystery and stillness, her artworks embody a perfect blend of fantasy and reality.
Commonly used in the Late Renaissance and Baroque periods,the egg tempera medium is a fast-drying water-soluble pigment mixture bound by the contents of an egg yolk. Chen is one of the artists who still practices by using this rare technique, giving her artwork a personal touch by using the ancient technique in a refreshing, distinctive manner.
Childhood stories and folklore is the artist’s source of inspiration for her works of art. They mainly feature a female protagonist, escaping into a world of wonder and imagination. The pieces are compared to popular American fantasy adventure story, Alice in Wonderland.
