Currently on view from now to 15 Dec 2016 at the Jewel Box, National Young Arts Foundation, Miami is an exhibition entitled Roots by Cuban Artist, Jose Parla. Curated by Laurie Ann Farell, the exhibition is presented by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
Parla spent his formative years in the underground art scene of the 1980s and 1990s where he embraced working with the art style of graffiti. The artist has since built an international reputation for his ability to capture natural forms of urban life. Each canvas portrays the raw materiality of everyday life – by the deft strokes of line, texture, colour and form.
The paintings on showcase are named after streets in Brooklyn –Flagler, Ashland, DeKalb, and Baltic. In this sense, the artist also portrays himself as going back to his ‘roots’ and creates a dialogue between the past and the present.
