The idea of death, the fear of it haunts the human animal like nothing else; it is the mainspring of human activity – designed largely to avoid the fatality of death, to overcome it by denying in some way that it is the final destiny of man…Ernest Becker (1973)
On show from 10 Jan to 12 Feb is an exhibition entitled Immortality Project I, by sculptor Sam Jinks at Sullivan & Strumpf, Singapore.
He develops his interrogation of the human condition through Ernest Becker’s seminal text “The Denial of Death”. Becker’s concept of “The Immortality Project” is whereby one focuses on the symbolic self, thus generating a personal belief to seek belonging, to be part of something that won’t die with the physical body – something eternal.
We are invited to look directly into the face of humanity – a connection that transcends the physical, but is also excruciatingly mortal in essence. An exercise in facing duality.
