Multidisciplinary artist Zai Kuning and curator and art historian June Yap, will be representing Singapore at the 2017 Venice Biennale, which will take place from 13 May to 26 November 2017.
Zai has spent more than a decade creating work focused on Malay culture and history, in particular, the Orang Laut (sea gypsies) of Southeast Asia. The team’s proposal for the biennale, Dapunta Hyang, will additionally delve into transmission and spread of the Malay language, through Zai’s research into the Mak Yong opera of Riau.
As with his more recent works, the idea of “voyage” forms the central theme of the exhibition. In addition to a series of wooden boats created by the artist, also among the exhibits are photographs of the Riau islanders.
