Wild and Free – A Tribute to Silvana Sutanto

30 July, 2017 by Intersection

39 (1) 4 Mother Knows Best _P2C3975 edited 6 Dancing on Ice _V3G9569 14 Family Trip 9P2C9318 E

It is often said that a mother’s love knows best. True to its meaning, the children of late wildlife photographer Silvana Sutanto is returning the favor to preserve her legacy by setting up the Silvana S Foundation.

Presenting a total of 15 of Silvana’s best works, WILD & FREE is a tribute to her passion for life. Priced at $3,000 to $6,000, her works are for sale and proceeds for this foundation goes to Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary.

Silvana had always felt compassion towards wild animals, especially those whose habitats are being threatened by humanity’s encroachment. Her works serve to raise awareness of their plight and bring us closer to nature.

Taken amidst rough terrain and harsh conditions in remote places, her works often depict the themes of love, family, and friendship among wild animals.

Silvana has left a legacy, not only with her family but also, through her works. We speak to Shaun Gozali on the Silvana S Foundation and Silvana’s personal journey of photographs taken over a span of nearly one and a half decades.

1. Who decided to set up the Silvana S Foundation, was this something that she Silvana wanted?

Ans: We collectively decided to set up the foundation, as we wanted to continue her legacy of supporting children and wildlife through her photography.
She often supported many children and wildlife related charities throughout her life and went to far flung regions where endangered species lived, or where people were impoverished for her photography/charity trips.

2. What jobs has Silvana down other than photography?

Ans: She was working as a director in a trading company in Singapore.
3. What is your favourite work from Silvana.
Ans: Our favourite work would be ‘Family Trip’ (photo of zebras). It took her several hours of waiting for the zebras to line up to take the perfect shot.
4. Which was Silvana’s favourite work(s) and why?

Ans: I think she also loves the family trip photo. After the trip, she spent many hours on the computer editing it and often told us the story about how she took the photo. Also, many of her friends urged her to be more public about her work after seeing that photo.
5. What was a memorable response that she’s had to her work?
Ans: This comment was from a family friend we received on the opening reception: “I am overwhelmed by Silvana’s talent, and even more by her commitment to her chosen craft. She has left a wonderful legacy in so many ways, including her children, and her positive influence will surely live on.

6. What does Silvana like about her work? Was there anything that she disliked about it?
Ans: She often loves the expression that her subjects gave her when she was taking their photos. She always said that it looked like they were trying to tell her their story through their expressions, often of family bonding, love, and friendship.
7. Did she have to sacrifice time from family for her passion in wildlife photography?
Ans: She always dedicated most of her holidays to photography, and all of us were supporting and helping her during her trips, may it be scouting good photo locations, or carrying her heavy equipment.

8. If she was still here, would there be a project that she has yet to complete/embark on? What would it be?
Ans: She mentioned to us before that she wanted to make a trip to Kalimantan to photography orang-utans in the jungle. She felt sympathy for the orang-utans whose homes were being destroyed by man, and were endangered.
9. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve been given by Silvana.
Ans: She always told us that in whatever we embarked on to work hard, pray, and to stay humble.

10. What are 3 words to describe her work?

Ans: Inspiring, respectful, dignified.

Aaron Gan themes up with Nespresso to give us The Gift of Art

27 April, 2017 by Anastasia Ong

Aaron Gan-page-001 FINAL KV NESPRESSO

Known for his technical flexibility in various genres and style, Singaporean artist Aaron Gan constantly pushes boundaries when it comes to brush-strokes, watercolour, and even traditional calligraphy.

It is perhaps this dogged determination expand his horizons that has seen the artist grow in demand, with an ever evolving body of work. Naturally, over time, his style of painting has evolved with maturity.

The artist explains that there is an understanding, and a deepened sense of trust in both the brush strokes and the self – which is important in maintaining his uniqueness and relevance as an artist, in the art market.

You’ve recently completed a commercial collaboration with Nespresso. How did that feel like?

I felt extremely honoured. To me, Nespresso is a household name that has long been associated with quality and excellence.

What is so special about this collaboration?

The collaboration was for a special Chinese New Year (CNY) gift pack range in Nespresso. CNY is an important tradition for us. Those who have been abroad travel home for a family reunion. Often, they bear gifts to express their appreciation, as well as to show their family that they are doing well. The meaning behind their gift, thus, carries significant weight, which is revealed in the artwork depicting the Mandarin character for ‘gift’.

Tell us more about the artwork and the values it represents.

The characters mean that a gift’s true value is the consideration for the recipient, one of the core values of this campaign. Key themes of gifting, traditional values and Chinese New Year are weaved seamlessly into the execution of the artwork.

The artwork follows through the Mandarin characters with the strokes depicting the journey Nespresso takes to ensure each serving of coffee is perfect and the important Chinese virtue of filial piety. It also symbolises respect for age-old traditions and is representative of gratitude, a show of respect and a demonstration of care and support for one’s parents and elders.

How long did you take to complete the artwork? What was the process like?

The artwork was a result of many months of discussion and to-and-fro communication with the client. We took over 6 months from start to end to come up with the final artwork.

What role does coffee play in your life?

I always start my day with a cup of Nespresso. It preps me up and gives me the zest I need to start the day the right way.

This is another interesting project in your recent series of artworks. What can we look forward to next?

The campaign has been a runaway success. Sales are brisk during this festive period and qualitative displays provided a strong Chinese New Year atmosphere. Social media videos we have produced to tell our Chinese New Year story are also very well-received. I look forward to more opportunities to collaborate in the future.
